IHG’s inaugural points purchase sale for 2024 is now live, offering up to a 100% bonus when you buy IHG points. This bonus applies to purchases of 11,000 points or more.
You can check your bonus, and purchase points on the offer page here.
The maximum number of IHG points you can buy during this promotion, excluding bonus points, is 150,000 (annual limit). This deal is available until 11:59 PM ET on February 2, 2024.
The cost of the points depends on how many you’re buying:
Points | Cost per point |
---|---|
Up to 10,000 | 1.35 cents per point |
11,000 to 25,000 (plus 100% bonus) | 0.575 cents per point |
26,000 to 150,000 (plus 100% bonus) | 0.5 cents per point |
Note that due to the change in slab at 25,000 points, buying 28,000 is cheaper than buying 25,000 points.
Is it worth buying?
If you are buying at 0.5 cents per point, it is not very difficult to redeem for a value better than that. IHG points can typically be redeemed for 0.6 cents or more. In fact, using IHG points is much easier compared to most other chains.
However, I wouldn’t recommend purchasing points just because they’re on sale, unless you have a specific plan for using them. The risk of points being randomly devalued without warning is all too real and has occurred far too often in the past to be overlooked.
Safer than buying Marriott or Hilton points.
Buying IHG points can be considered a safer bet compared to Marriott and Hilton points, even though the latter two offer great redemption value at luxury hotels.
This is mainly due to IHG maintaining consistent redemption value across a wide range of hotels, including select service hotels. At select service or non-luxury hotels, Marriott and Hilton (especially Hilton), usually offer a terrible redemption value for points.
Even better for IHG Credit Card Holders.
For IHG Credit Card holders, this offer is even more enticing. Not only can you earn more IHG points by using your card to buy points, but you can also redeem them for a better value.
IHG offers 4th night free on redemption for credit card holders — a saving of around 25%. This makes the points purchase offer very difficult to ignore.
